The freeborn Anderson family lived just north of the present day Bergton Fairgrounds on Crab Run Road. The Anderson family is the first known free black family in Brocks Gap. They lived on a branch called Goose Creek and had their own farm on 47-acres of land. The couple married in 1802 and had two children. It is unknown if they were born free or set free, but their statues were listed as free on their marriage bond.
Historian and author Pat Turner Ritchie documents the family’s history in her book, “Andrew & Aggy Anderson, Free Black Family in Brocks Gap, 1807-1845” that can be purchased at the Fulks Run Grocery Store on 11441 Brocks Gap Road in Fulks Run, Virginia. Turner Ritchie talks about her book, in a clip that can be accessed at valleyblackheritage.org.
