The Mt. Zion Methodist Church was organized in 1867. The black Methodist community raised funds to build a church, completed in 1887. The church was central to the African American community and was used for religious, educational, political, and social events. It was also affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Woodstock’s first African American school was built on the lot of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church. They held “bush meetings” and other children's services in partnership with other local black churches in the area. Today, the church is part of the Shenandoah Valley charge with Strasburg’s Mt. Zion Methodist churches and assists in the upkeep of the Riverview cemetery.
