According to land deeds, Lewis Williams was the earliest African American landowner in Lewisville, who purchased land from A.L.P. LaRue in 1870. Several other African Americans purchased lots of land near Williams in the following years, including William Holmes, Samuel Lockley, and Jesse Johnson. In 1881 the area was named Lewistown in the land tax records, and in 1882 it was recorded as Lewisville. By 1893 there were at least 18 African American landowners living in Lewisville. Today, all of the original houses are gone, and many have been replaced with modern ones. The Lewisville school was also demolished, but the Mount Airy Church (1a) and he Locust Grove Cemetery (1b) are still in this area.
