In 2020, the historic African American John Wesley United Methodist Church celebrated 155 years of service. The congregation, organized in 1865 as John Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church, held its early meetings in the home of Daniel and Maria Harris Brown. Property owners William and Harriet Peters sold a plot of land to church trustees in 1866 so a place of worship could be erected on Wolfe Street. The church then relocated to Liberty Street in 1880. The present building, constructed in 1978 on Sterling Street, is where it holds service today.
