The Newtown School of East Elkton was a Rosenwald School that served African American students during segregation. The school received funding from the Rosenwald Fund, donations from the African American community, and the Rockingham County school board. The Scholl was erected as a “three-teacher school” in 1921-1922. It was the last school Rockingham County erected “solely for black students.” The school closed in 1965, and today is the only remaining Rosenwald School of the two built in Rockingham County.
